5.Resources to Get You SurfingInternet for kids!: A Beginners Guide to Surfing the Net, by Ted Pederson & Francis Moss. Published by Price Stern Sloan. 1995, USA This is a book for kids that really is for kids, and a good effort it is, too. In spite of the authors irritating convention of rolling up their basic information in a silly story about two children who go off to Cyberspace Academy where Cybersarge shows them how to navigate the Net, they have put all the essential stuff in an easily digested form. There is a section for parents and teachers, too. This is an outstanding book, and a bargain to boot. Internet for Dummies: A Reference for the Rest of Us, by John R. Levine & Carol Baroudi. Published by IDG Books. 2nd edition 1994, USA IDG Books publishes some of the best computer instruction books under the worlds worst series title, For Dummies. Every book Ive seen in this series has been excellent. This volume is no exception. It gives you the basics of how to get on the Internet and what to do once youre on-line. Information is presented in clear, easy-to-understand language with lots of examples to illustrate each point. If youre staring out into the vast Internet ocean wondering how you catch your first wave, this is a good place to start. Whats on the Web, edited by Eric Gagnon. Published by Internet Media. Fall/Winter 1995/1996, USA. This big fat tome is published quarterly and contains hundreds of annotated web sites organized by category. One of the best features of the book is its introductory material on the World Wide Web, what it is and what it can do when its at its best. This is amplified by a very good graphical presentation of the main points which might help to smooth out your learning curve once you get on-line. The editors certainly havent confined themselves to safe web site choices. Youll find Web pages for just about everybody in the book, from politically conservative gun owners to believers in the paranormal. This is a great book to have handy whenever you get the urge to fire up your computer and web browser and explore the Web. This article appears in AS Volume 2, # 3.
